Bailey notches triple-double in 165-133 win
Lightning set records for points and 3-pointers
Toby Bailey recorded the second triple-double in team history on Friday night and the L.A. Lightning set records for points and 3-pointers in a 165-133 pro basketball rout of the Nevada Pride.
Bailey, a former UCLA star who played with the Phoenix Suns, had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. He also notched the IBL team's first triple-double last year.
Trayvon Lathan led the Lightning (10-2) with 28 points, 10 rebounds (six offensive) and four assists. He had 20 points in the second quarter as the Lightning built a 79-64 halftime lead.
The Lightning won their fourth straight by outscoring the visitors 85-57 in the middle two quarters.
Lathan didn’t enter the game until the second period but made up for lost time with 20 points (on 10-of-13 shooting) and seven rebounds in just 12 minutes.
Fred Vinson knocked down 8-of-15 from 3-point land and scored 26 for L.A. , which had eight players in double figures. Center Chris Ayer hit 8-of-9 shots and scored 17 points with 12 rebounds and four blocks.
The defending IBL champions broke their team scoring record by five and drained 25 3-pointers, surpassing the old record of 19.They hit 48.1 percent of those long-range shots and also set a record for attempts with 52.
All 13 Lightning players scored and nine connected from downtown.
“It was a wide-open game,” said L.A. coach Ron Quarterman. “They were missing some players and we came out and took care of business. When everybody’s back, we’re hard to beat.”
Lorenzo Davis had 28 points and 25 rebounds for the Pride. Johnny Parker added 27 points and seven rebounds and Harry Lum had 24 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists.
L.A. hit 52.8 percent from the field while setting a team record for field-goal attempts (123) and tying the mark for field-goals made (65).
The Lightning won the board battle 71-56 and improved to 8-0 when outrebounding the opponent and 8-0 when scoring 125 or more.
Vinson hit five of the Lightning’s 10 treys in the third period, helping his team win the stanza 45-27. For the game, Bryon Russell (14 points) had four 3-pointers and Bailey hit 4-7.
“We were at full strength, outside of Lamond (Murray), for the first time,” noted Vinson. “It was a fun outing. We expect a lot tougher games in the future.”
Billy Knight had 15 points and Juaquin Hawkins and Travis Pinick chipped in with 11 apiece as the Lightning reserves blitzed their counterparts 88-10.
State Senator Tony Strickland tallied a career-best nine points for Los Angeles .
The same teams will play on Saturday at the Gilbert Sports Arena with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
